Matlock Shorthorns Heading

History

Matlock Deluxe
Matlock Deluxe
- home bred bull from the 1960’s.

In July of 1941, my Dad (Byron Haydock) purchased his first purebred Shorthorn female - a yearling heifer from F.H. Dunstan of Lloydminster.  In 1943 he purchased three more purebred females.  He also bought his first purebred bull, a yearling named Balmuchy Danny.  These animals were the beginning of Matlock Shorthorns.

I attended Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta for two years, and in 1970 I moved back home to farm and do custom AI’ing.  It was about that time that we started sampling a few other breeds.  Maine Anjou, Limousin, Simmental and Murray Grey were all tried for a little while.  The Shorthorns held their own, and for the last fifteen to twenty years we have been raising only purebred Shorthorns alongside our commercial herd.

Over the years we exhibited at some of the major fairs and exhibitions, including Canadian Western Agribition, Saskatoon Fall Fair, Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up, Edmonton’s Farmfair International, and in years past the Calgary Fall Round-Up.  A few of the highlights are pictured below.

Matlock Gloria 6G, by CCS Marc Drive and out of a daughter of IDS Duke of Dublin, Gloria was named the Grand Champion Shorthorn Female at the 1999 Canadian Western Agribition.  She was sold in the 2000 Agribition Shorthorn Sale to Maryland, USA.

We consigned Matlock Nakita 58N to the 2004 Roses Are Red Sale in Toronto.  She was purchased by Rick Salzsauler of Fantasy Lane Farms, Rockwood, Ontario.  Nakita was named the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the 2006 Farmfair.

Matlock NL Lisa 31R was purchased from us at the 2006 Canadian Western Agribition Shorthorn Sale by Terry Knodel of Calgary, Alberta.  She was the Reserve Senior Champion Female at the 2007 Canadian Western Agribition and was sold in The 2008 Fever Sale for $5400 to Little Cedar Cattle Co of Beaverton, Michigan.

Bull sales that we have consigned to include the bull test that was held at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and the Lloydminster Bull Sale.  For the last few years we have been consigning bulls to the Lakeland College Bull Test Station in Vermilion, Alberta.

Consignment sales that we have participated in include Canadian Western Agribition, Edmonton Farmfair International, and the Shorthorn Alliance Sale which is hosted by the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association.

Matlock Paramount 14P was a direct son of Deerpark Improver and out of a Mandalong Super Flag daughter.  His photo, above and to the left, was taken at the 1984 Lloydminster Bull Sale, where he was named the Grand Champion Shorthorn Bull.  The judge that day was Rob Holowaychuk, who many will know through his extensive involvement in the Angus breed.

Matlock Saxon 14S was sired by IDS Duke of Dublin, and out of a daughter of Mandalong Super Elephant.  Grand Champion at the 1986 Lloydminster Bull Sale, his buyers (pictured standing behind him) include Howard Schneider, Lee Wilson, Bryon Wolters and Larry Bertz.

Matlock Torpedo 49T was shown alongside of his dam, Matlock Rhea 9R, who was named the Grand Champion Shorthorn Female at Edmonton’s Farmfair International in 1985.  Torpedo was sold in the Shorthorn sale for $10,000 to Winalot Shorthorns, Gemvale Shorthorns and The A-Team.

For quite a number of years, we have used some of the best AI bull available.  Highfield Irish Mist, IDS Duke Of Dublin, HS Instant Enticer, Mandalong Super Flag, and others were used successfully.

Our herdsires for the last few years have included Glory-Jay McGamaliel 8G, Matlock Fredrick 3F, and Nicol Larado 3L - who was named the Grand Champion Shorthorn Bull at the 2002 Canadian Western Agribition.  In 2008 we purchased Six S Panther, sired by a son of Eionmor Mr Gus 80C, and out of Norvyk Joedean Dottie, a powerful daughter of Circle M Ghostrider 10G.  We look forward with anticipation to his first calves.

2009 marks our 68th year in the Shorthorn business.  We have enjoyed our involvement with the breed, and look forward to the years to come.
